Summary

A。D。 57。 Battle-scarred veterans of the Roman army Tribune Cato and Centurion Macro return to Rome。 Thanks to the failure of their recent campaign on the eastern frontier they face a hostile reception at the imperial court。 Their reputations and future are at stake。

When Emperor Nero's infatuation with his mistress is exploited by political enemies, he reluctantly banishes her into exile。 Cato, isolated and unwelcome in Rome, is forced to escort her to Sardinia。

Arriving on the restless, simmering island with a small cadre of officers, Cato faces peril on three fronts: a fractured command, a deadly plague spreading across the province。。。and a violent insurgency threatening to tip the province into blood-stained chaos。

Book ixx in the series sees Macro finally carry out his threat to retire from the legion leaving Cato alone when he is ‘gently persuaded’ to accompany an exile to Sardinia。 Whilst there Cato is also tasked with dealing with native tribesmen who are taking advantage of a pandemic to cause havoc with the business of Rome。 But will the marauders or the sickness prove to be the bigger problem?

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Great read, better than his last few。 The right time for Macro to leave the army and part ways with Cato, but I’m glad the cliffhanger at the end of the book means they will be reunited!! Only downside was reading about ‘the pestilence’ - written in 2019 I’m sure this was influenced by COVID - like we weren’t fed up enough of reading about illnesses and quarantining etc

Slightly different style to this one, but still enjoyable。

It was ok。 Nothing special。 Only just scrapes into the 4-star zone。

Another fantastic installment of this series , its coming to an end now and the hilarious grizzly old Macro was sorely missed。 Again it was an audio book and im glad that Mr Keeble has been a permanent fixture for theses last few books。

A new chapterAnd so begins life without centurion Macro。Sparrow excels again in his writing, introducing yet more complexity into Cato's world。Twists and turns throughout lead to a new and exciting side of our intrepid prefect。Well written and worthy of the previous books。 A new chapterAnd so begins life without centurion Macro。Sparrow excels again in his writing, introducing yet more complexity into Cato's world。Twists and turns throughout lead to a new and exciting side of our intrepid prefect。Well written and worthy of the previous books。 。。。more

My first venture into Simon Scarrow, but I feel it will be worth reading some more。It is always difficult getting into characters who have clearly been developing over a long series of books。Well worth a read。

It is a little funny to think that Simon Scarrow has written (and I have read) 19 books about the adventures of his two characters Cato and Macro in the Roman Army。 It goes without saying that there really isn't much original here, but Simon Scarrow certainly knows how to write these kind of books and they are entertaining and still a little gripping。 Clearly I personally find myself investing in the characters and am intrigued to read about what they get up to。The book ended in such a way that It is a little funny to think that Simon Scarrow has written (and I have read) 19 books about the adventures of his two characters Cato and Macro in the Roman Army。 It goes without saying that there really isn't much original here, but Simon Scarrow certainly knows how to write these kind of books and they are entertaining and still a little gripping。 Clearly I personally find myself investing in the characters and am intrigued to read about what they get up to。The book ended in such a way that the series could continue, but equally couldn't。 To be honest, it is probably best left to finish there, but lets see。 。。。more

This book is for 2021!Cato and Macro are separated for the first time; Macro is going to Britannia with his new wife Petronella to live with Macro's mother。 He has chosen his discharge and grew his backpay because it is time。 Cato, however, must stay in Rome and deal with the fallout from the failed campaigns in Armenia and Parthia。 He finds himself relieved of command of the Second Cohort and sent to escort one of Nero's former mistresses to her exile in Sardinia。 In addition to escorting Claud This book is for 2021!Cato and Macro are separated for the first time; Macro is going to Britannia with his new wife Petronella to live with Macro's mother。 He has chosen his discharge and grew his backpay because it is time。 Cato, however, must stay in Rome and deal with the fallout from the failed campaigns in Armenia and Parthia。 He finds himself relieved of command of the Second Cohort and sent to escort one of Nero's former mistresses to her exile in Sardinia。 In addition to escorting Claudia Acte, Cato is also given orders to put down the insurrection in the south of the island。 If that wasn't bad enough, a plague had broken out。I found this funny because we have a weakling in the White House (sorry, I should have said the Capitoline), a plague, and civil unrest (AntiFa's ancestors)。 As Cato's new associate/spy Apollonius asked Cato: "How far can a good man succeed in a corrupt world? I'd like to know the answer to that。"Scarrow does his homework and tries to be as historically accurate while taking some artistic license to tell a story。 Thus, you cannot really accuse Scarrow of using allegory。 However, he does stray into alternate history。 He did that in Eagles in the Sand and now this one。 If you read the actual history of Claudia Acte, her fate and backstory is different enough that you have to wonder whether there are two different Claudia Actes。 This one has much more Cato and very little Macro so it is a different dynamic。 Still worth reading and I finished this in 3 days。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A solid book, well written, quite good plot, classic Scarrow quality, but still it made me feel frustrated, and here is why。This is the 19th installment for the adventures of Cato, and we've seen him grow into quite the officer。 Great battles in Britannia, Parthia, scheming in the Imperial palace, pirates, all that epic stuff。 Now that Cato has earned all this fame in these large-scale campaigns, where does he go? Some backwater village in Sardinia, fighting a war band of maybe 200 barbarians。 W A solid book, well written, quite good plot, classic Scarrow quality, but still it made me feel frustrated, and here is why。This is the 19th installment for the adventures of Cato, and we've seen him grow into quite the officer。 Great battles in Britannia, Parthia, scheming in the Imperial palace, pirates, all that epic stuff。 Now that Cato has earned all this fame in these large-scale campaigns, where does he go? Some backwater village in Sardinia, fighting a war band of maybe 200 barbarians。 What is this? If Scarrow really wants to tie up these series in the year of the four emperors (which is still over ten years away), he should be focusing on more important things, making Cato a Legate, doing time skips, etc。 And in the next book synapsis Cato will be fighting some disgruntled ex-legionnaire in Britannia? Maybe some epic brawling on bars, covered in shit and puke? Don't get me wrong, it is a good book。 But for us who have been here for all these books, this plot is just so disappointing in scale。 We demand more epic stuff, like the revolt by Boudicca, more Parthia stuff, Jewish conflicts。 Not some small 50-man sieges on mudhuts。。。please make Cato great again。 He shouldn't be thinking about retiring on some gloomy british farm with his dog and new girlfriend, tending on potatoes and fighting off beggars with sticks。 He should be on his way to become a damn general under Vespasian。 。。。more
